Cool Moves!
Artistry of Motion

Visitors to Cool Moves! Artistry of Motion uncover the beauty and science of motion.

The phenomenon of motion can be characterized by simple types of contrasting movements: translation/rotation, continuous/vibrating, and predictable/unpredictable. Within these types of motion a variety of patterns can be seen, sounds can be produced, and art can be created.

In 15 exhibits, visitors are invited to experiment with motion by:
  • Swinging a giant magnetic pendulum through a field of magnets to investigate the unpredictability of chaotic motion;
  • Playing with light and water to form patterns of reflection and refraction in the Ripple Tank;
  • Changing the direction and speed of a tornado made of swirling misty water;
  • Creating their own light and sound show as they trigger motion detectors using the movement of their bodies;
  • Racing cars down a retractable ramp; and much more.
